SKILLcard Application

What is a SKILLcard?

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme was created to reduce the number and severity of workplace accidents and injuries in the UK’s construction industry. It soon became obvious that there are specific sections of the construction industry that have unique or very specific safety and training requirements. As a result, the CSCS Affiliate cards were created to ensure that each section of the industry had appropriate HSE and training standards, but still fell within the universal CSCS Scheme.

Today, nearly all employers in the UK’s construction industry require new hires in the mechanical services field to have the appropriate SkillCard card before they can begin work on-site, and in many cases before they will be considered for a position.

How can I get a SKILLcard?

  1. First, apply for the appropriate card. The simplest way to do that is to call us at the number at the bottom of this page. We will send you an official application form, and can sign you up for your HS&E test (see below) at the same time.

  2. Next, take the CITB HS&E test. One thing all SKILLcards have in common is the requirement that you take (and pass) one of the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Tests before you can receive your card.

  3. Last, check the requirements for the particular SKILLcard you are applying for. In order for your application to be successful, you will need to fulfil certain requirements which vary depending on what colour card you are seeking.

There are many different types of SkillCards available. The lowest level cards require only basic HSE certification. However, the Blue Skillcard will require a level 2 NVQ. At the highest level, the Black cards require a Level 5 NVQ. You should see the entry on this website for each individual card to learn all the details.

What if my qualifications were earned in another country?

If you have the equivalent qualifications from another country, you must have them recognised by UK NARIC before they can be applied to your SKILLcard.

How long is a SKILLcard valid for?

Different SKILLcards are valid for different lengths of time. Most SKILLcards are renewable at regular 5 year intervals. However, the Red and Blue SKILLcards are considered temporary, and should be replaced with a Blue card as soon as the relevant NVQ requirements have been met.

You should see each card’s entry for detailed information.

How long will it take to receive a SKILLcard?

In general, it takes 30 working days for you to receive your card, starting once we have received all of the paperwork and copies of your certification documents.

What do I do if I lose my card?

Call us or apply online for a duplicate card. If your original card was still valid, you will be issued a replacement card without any additional testing or certification.

How do I renew my card?

Renewing a (permanent) SKILLcard which is about to expire is a simple process, essentially identical to applying for a new card. As your HS&E test will have expired, you’ll have to take it again, as well as the courses will need to be repeated.
