Prime Minister David Cameron has finally agreed that it is time to ‘get Britain building’ again after GDP figures reflected a sharp decline in the area of construction. With the intention of giving new development a kick start, Cameron announced the launch of a £1billion project he calls the New Homes Bonus.
What Is ‘Get Britain Building’?
Get Britain Building is a construction industry campaign that is completely non-party affiliated. Its sole aim is to encourage politicians to recognise how important construction is to the nation as a whole and the fact that it can be put to use to rebuild the UK’s economy. Prime Minister Cameron seems optimistic that this movement is the way to increase the overall economy after the numbers for the first quarter of 2011 showed an overall growth of just 0.5%. He stated that other industries are on the rise including manufacturing and exports, but that the numbers were held back by the ‘disastrous performance from construction.’
What Will This Project Entail?
The Get Britain Building program only allows for a total expenditure of £1 billion for the entire Comprehensive Spending Review period. However, it is just what the building industry needs to pull itself out of the slumps. This project will put not only construction workers back on the job, but will jumpstart the building and manufacturing production companies as well. Mike Leonard, the Get Britain Building spokesperson stated that investing in construction will create 2.5 million jobs and create a significant increase in GDP.
