What is the course?

The CPCS A21 Wheeled Loading Shovel course has been developed to assist operatives in how to safely and effectively operate a wheeled loading shovel through classroom and practical instruction.

Course Content

  • Understanding of all pre-start and running checks, as well as shut down procedures for equipment
  • How to safely mount and dismount
  • Appreciation of safety precautions relating to underground/overhead services
  • Configuration of wheeled loading shovel for both road travel and on-site work
  • How to place equipment into out of service condition
  • Understanding of excavations of different materials, volumes and loads including creating stockpiles and ramps from different materials on an embankment
  • Loading and unloading procedures, load integrity and security of operative and equipment

How is the Course Taught and Assessed?

This course is a combination of practical tutorials and classroom discussion, with assessment carried out via both theory and practical tests.

Who Should Take This Course?

Potential operators with no formal training should take this course, as well as wheeled loading shovel operators who require a refresher course.

What Qualifications Will I Receive?

Successful candidates will be awarded a CITB National Construction College certificate and, upon completion of the CPCS Technical Tests, a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

Entry Requirements

Before applying for this course applicants must have passed a CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test within two years of the course. Applicants must also have a good understanding of written and spoken English.

What Can I Do Next?

Once the CPCS A21 Wheeled Loading Shovel course has been completed candidates may wish to apply for the Competent Operator Card, Excavator 360 Tracked above 10 tonnes course, Dump Truck course and Excavator 180 Wheeled course.
