Blue CPCS Card - Competent Operator

Why do I need a CPCS Card?

The Blue (Competent Operator) CPCS card shows employers that you are competent to operate a particular type of plant. It shows that you have both the practical and theory skills to do the job, the HS&E training needed to do it safely, and real world experience with this particular category of plant.

Blue CPCS card holders have demonstrated their ability to work unsupervised, and may in fact be called upon to supervise Red (Trained Operator) CPCS card holders on the worksite.

What qualifications will I need?

Before you can move from a Red (Trained Operator) CPCS card to a Blue (Competent Operator) CPCS card, you must do the following:

  • Hold a Red CPCS card that is either still valid, or within its 12 month grace period
  • Pass a relevant CITB HS&E test
  • Have earned either an NVQ or SVQ relevant to the category of card for which you are applying
  • Complete a paper application form

Can I skip the Red CPCS card?

Some operators can apply for a Blue CPCS card without having a Red CPCS card. If this is the case for you, then you must have earned either an NVQ or SVQ relevant to the category of card for which you are applying for.

In addition to that you must pass the CPCS Technical Tests in the related category of CPCS Course:

  • CPCS Theory Test (within 2 years of passing the HS&E Test)
  • CPCS Practical Test (within 6 months of passing the Technical Test and within 2 years of passing the HS&E Test)

How long is the certification valid for?

The Blue (Competent Operator) CPCS Card is valid for five years, and can be renewed as many times as necessary.

What is the next step?

There is no higher level of CPCS card available, but operators can improve their skills and career prospects by adding more endorsements and/or categories to their existing cards. This would require earning more relevant NVQs or SVQs, and taking the relevant HS&E and Technical Tests.
